Preventive Dental Care · Check-ups, cleans and the reasons behind them
Preventive dental care means regular check-ups and professional cleans that aim to catch problems while they’re small. At Absolute Dental, your dentist also asks about food, drinks, dry mouth, sleep and grinding, because those habits shape what happens to your teeth between visits.

Updated . General information only; your dentist will advise on your own mouth.
A clean removes what has built up. These four conversations are about what builds it up in the first place.
Food and drinks
How often sugar arrives matters as much as how much. Frequent sugary snacks and drinks are a main cause of decay (healthdirect, tooth decay). We look at your usual day and pick a change or two that fits.
Dry mouth
Saliva rinses and protects your teeth. Some medicines and breathing through your mouth can reduce it, so we ask what you take and how your mouth feels on waking.
Sleep and grinding
Worn edges, chips and a tender jaw can point to grinding at night. Stress and poor sleep often travel with grinding (healthdirect, teeth grinding), so your sleep comes into it.
Fluoride
Fluoride toothpaste prevents decay, and the evidence for it is strong (Walsh et al., 2019). If you have doubts, ask. We’ll explain your own risk and respect what you decide.
Not every visit needs all four. Your dentist will say which ones matter for you this time.
| Part of the visit | What happens | Worth knowing |
|---|---|---|
| Examination | We look at teeth, bite and jaw, check your tongue, cheeks and palate, and measure your gums. | X-rays reveal what eyes can’t, at a low radiation dose (healthdirect, X-rays). We take them when there’s a clinical reason. |
| Professional clean | Plaque and hardened calculus are removed from your teeth, including just under the gumline. | Bleeding gums are worth checking. Gingivitis, the early stage of gum disease, can usually be reversed (healthdirect, gum disease). |
| Home-care plan | You leave with a few specific changes, such as brushing angle, cleaning between teeth or a snack swap. | Powered brushes edge out manual ones slightly for plaque and gum inflammation (Yaacob et al., 2014). |
| Sports mouthguard | If you play contact sport, ask about a custom guard. | We’ll explain which type, if any, suits you. |
Most check-ups follow the same order. Ask about any step before it starts.
New medicines, changes in your health, a dry mouth, sore gums or anything you’ve noticed since last time.
Teeth, gums, bite and soft tissues, with X-rays only if there’s a clinical reason.
Plaque and calculus come off. Ask for a pause whenever you need one.
Your interval and home-care changes are set around your own risk, not a fixed calendar.
That depends on what your assessment finds. You’ll see the plan and its fees before anything starts, including any later visits or upkeep it may need.
Your health fund rebate depends on your cover, annual limits and waiting periods. Payment plans have their own terms and approval checks.

MiSplint® 5D is a custom night splint to help protect teeth and dental work from grinding and clenching, planned with your jaw and sleep in mind.
It depends on your own risk of decay and gum disease, so no single interval suits everyone. Many people are asked back about every six months. Some do well with longer between visits, and some need to come more often. Your dentist will suggest an interval and explain why.
Several things move your risk up. Sweet food and drinks taken often through the day are a main cause of decay (healthdirect, tooth decay). Smoking raises the risk of gum disease (healthdirect, gum disease). A dry mouth, a history of gum disease and a lot of past fillings can also shorten the gap. A low-risk mouth with good cleaning at home can usually go longer between visits.
At the end of each visit we agree your next review around your own risk, not a fixed calendar. Don’t wait for it if something changes. Bleeding gums, a sensitive or chipped tooth, a swelling or pain are all reasons to call sooner. Fees are explained before treatment, and your health fund can tell you what your policy pays for a check-up and clean. The same plain explanation of costs comes with the rest of our dental services.
