MiCrown® 5D: How We Plan Crowns And Bridges

MiCrown® 5D is Absolute Dental’s five-stage plan for crowns and bridges: Diagnose, Design, Detail, Deliver and Defend. It’s a way of working, not a material or a brand of crown, and it starts by asking whether your tooth needs a crown at all.

Questions Before Any Crown.

A crown covers the whole tooth, so it’s worth being sure. The pathway starts here.

  1. The cause

    “Why did this tooth break?”

Decay, a large old filling or grinding? Finding the cause shapes the plan and helps protect the new crown.

  2. What’s left

    “Could a smaller repair work?”

If enough healthy tooth remains, an onlay or a filling may do the job with less drilling.

  3. Materials

“What would you like it made of?”

Ceramic suits many teeth and contains no metal. You’ll hear how each option suits your bite.

  4. Your bite

    “Do you grind at night?”

Heavy grinding can crack teeth and dental work (healthdirect, teeth grinding). A splint may be suggested to protect the crown.

Crown, Onlay Or Bridge?

Compared on what each one suits and how much tooth it uses.

OptionSuitsWorth knowing
OnlayA weakened tooth that still has healthy walls.Covers part of the tooth, so more natural tooth is kept.
Ceramic crownA cracked, heavily filled or root-treated tooth.Covers the whole tooth. Some can be finished in a single visit using CEREC.
BridgeA gap beside teeth that need crowns anyway.Uses the teeth on either side as supports, so those teeth are shaped too.
MonitoringA small crack with no symptoms.Sometimes the right call is to watch it and review.

The Five Stages Of MiCrown® 5D.

Each stage has a job. The clinical details depend on your tooth.

  1. Diagnose

Work out what damaged the tooth, how much sound tooth remains and whether something simpler would work.

  2. Design

Plan the shape, material and fit around your bite, appearance and cleaning.

  3. Detail

Fine-tune the edges, shade and contacts with the teeth next to it.

  4. Deliver

Fit the crown, then check your bite, comfort and how easily you can clean around it.

  5. Defend

Check the crown, tooth and gums at reviews, and protect it if you grind.

What A Crown Protects, And What It Doesn’t.

What It Can Do

  • Hold a cracked tooth together
  • Restore shape and bite on a weak tooth
  • Replace a large filling that has failed

What It Can’t Do

  • Stop decay at its edges without good cleaning
  • Last forever
  • Rule out root canal treatment if the nerve fails later
Crowns can come loose, chip or wear out, and a crowned tooth can still need root canal treatment later. The Defend stage is there to catch problems early.

What Will It Cost?

That depends on what your assessment finds. You’ll see the plan and its fees before anything starts, including any later visits or upkeep it may need.

HICAPSHBFnib

Your health fund rebate depends on your cover, annual limits and waiting periods. Payment plans have their own terms and approval checks.

Frequently Asked Questions

Fees vary between practices, and your own quote comes after the Diagnose stage, once we know what the tooth needs. We can’t give you a price here. For a sense of scale, one published survey puts the national average for a full veneered crown at about $1,678.

In March 2023, CHOICE reported an Australian Dental Association fee survey to 1 July 2022. It put the average for a full veneered crown (item 615) at $1,678, with a range of $1,250 to $2,100. These are national survey figures from that time, not this clinic’s fee, and they cover the crown item only.

A crown is often one part of the treatment. A root canal, a build-up under the crown and a temporary crown are separate items where they apply, and the material and method can change the fee. Ask for an itemised quote and check what your fund pays: benefits depend on your policy, its limits and any waiting period. We can claim eligible items through HICAPS with participating funds on the day. Medicare doesn’t cover most dental services.
