MiSplint® 5D: Custom Splints For Grinding And Clenching

MiSplint® 5D is Absolute Dental’s five-stage plan for a custom splint that helps protect teeth and dental work from grinding and clenching. Grinding often goes hand in hand with stress or poor sleep, so sleep is part of the conversation. The splint shields teeth; it doesn’t stop the grinding itself.

Why We Ask About Your Sleep.

Grinding is more than a tooth problem. These questions help us see the whole pattern.

  1. Sleep

“Do you snore or wake unrefreshed?”

Grinding at night can come alongside sleep disorders such as sleep apnoea (healthdirect, teeth grinding). If the signs fit, we’ll suggest seeing your GP.

  2. Stress

“Do you clench when you’re busy or tense?”

Stress, poor sleep and certain medicines can all feed into grinding (healthdirect, teeth grinding).

  3. Your jaw

“Does your jaw ache in the morning?”

Jaw pain has many causes. We check the joints and muscles and tell you if someone else should take a look.

  4. Dental work

“Have you chipped teeth or fillings?”

Crowns, veneers and implant teeth can be damaged by grinding. A splint may help protect them.

Which Night Appliance Fits The Problem?

Two night-time appliances are often confused. Here’s what each one does, and doesn’t do.

The Five Stages Of MiSplint® 5D.

Each stage checks something different, from wear patterns to fit.

  1. Diagnose

Look at wear, chips, jaw comfort and sleep. More assessment may be needed.

  2. Design

Choose the splint type, which arch it covers and the material.

  3. Detail

Check how it grips, how smooth it is and where the teeth meet it.

  4. Deliver

Fit and adjust it, then show you how to wear, clean and store it.

  5. Defend

Review wear, fit and bite, and again after any change to your dental work.

What A Splint Does, And What It Doesn’t.

What It Can Do

  • Help protect teeth and dental work from grinding
  • Protect new crowns or veneers once they’re fitted
  • Be adjusted as your teeth or dental work change

What It Can’t Do

  • Stop you grinding
  • Cure jaw pain
  • Treat snoring or sleep apnoea
If your splint becomes painful, damaged or loose, bring it in rather than adjusting it yourself.

What Will It Cost?

That depends on what your assessment finds. You’ll see the plan and its fees before anything starts, including any later visits or upkeep it may need.

Frequently Asked Questions

Probably not. A splint is there to take the force of grinding and clenching off your teeth and dental work, not to switch the habit off. It helps protect teeth from wear and chipping while the grinding goes on.

Grinding has several possible triggers. Stress, poor sleep and certain medicines are among them (healthdirect, teeth grinding), so we ask about all three. A splint doesn’t change those causes, and it isn’t a treatment for snoring or sleep apnoea. It can protect new crowns or veneers once they’re fitted, and it can be adjusted as your teeth or dental work change.

Some people notice they grind less with a splint, and some don’t. We can’t promise either. What we can do is check wear, chips and jaw comfort at your reviews, and tell you if the pattern changes or if someone else should look at it. If your splint becomes painful, damaged or loose, bring it in rather than adjusting it yourself. Our five stages are Diagnose, Design, Detail, Deliver and Defend.
