HBF Members’ Plus
We take part in HBF Members’ Plus. What you get back, and what you pay yourself, depends on your cover and on the treatment you have.
About HBFNo surprises at the desk.
Money questions shouldn’t rush a health decision. Before you decide to go ahead, we explain what treatment costs and how you can pay, whether that’s a health fund claim or a payment plan.

You pay on the day of service. If treatment takes several visits, we talk through the care and costs before your appointment.
Eligible health fund claims can be processed with HICAPS. If you’d like a payment plan, arrange it with our team before treatment starts.
Check what your cover includes, ask us for item numbers and bring your card. Your insurer sets the rebate for your treatment, whether it’s a check-up or a repair.

About HBFIt covers eligible practitioners and services only. Before treatment, look at your policy, your waiting periods, the limits you have left and which dentists take part.
About nibHICAPS is an electronic claiming service. At reception we can process eligible claims with participating funds, and you pay any gap that remains.
About HICAPSPlease note: Specialist Prosthodontist Dr Michelle Huang is not affiliated with the nib schedule. Fees for specialist treatment with Dr Michelle may differ from nib First Choice Network scheduled fees. Check your expected rebate with our team or nib before treatment.
Benefits and claiming eligibility vary by fund and policy. These logos do not indicate preferred-provider arrangements. Confirm your cover and current claiming options before your visit.
Ask for treatment item numbers if we have them, then check waiting periods, your remaining benefits and the rebate you can expect with your insurer.
Bring your health fund card, physical or supported digital, and let reception know you want to claim through HICAPS.
Once you’ve had eligible treatment, we submit the claim. If your fund accepts it, the benefit comes off the fee and you settle the rest.
When a claim won’t process at the desk, we hand you an itemised receipt to take up with your fund.
If you’re eligible, a payment plan may be available. Compare fees, repayment schedules and conditions before picking one, and make your treatment decision on clinical grounds first.
If you’re eligible, you may split approved dental costs into four instalments over six weeks.
Approval, eligibility and current Afterpay terms apply.
Explore AfterpayIf you’re eligible, humm may let you spread approved treatment costs over time.
Approval, fees, limits and repayment conditions depend on the product and provider.
Explore hummZip may be available if you’d like to pay for treatment over time and you’re eligible.
Zip determines approval, account limits, fees and repayment terms.
Explore ZipEligible patients can reach finance with humm and/or Zip Money through this plan.
This is not a health fund or government benefit. Provider approval, fees and repayment terms apply.
Explore National Dental PlanApproval for a payment plan says nothing about whether treatment suits you. Your dentist covers clinical needs, risks and alternatives, and the finance provider decides approval and repayment terms.
Each government arrangement has its own eligibility and service rules. Our team can show you what to check before your visit.
If you hold a DVA card, you may be able to have dental treatment under DVA arrangements. What’s covered depends on the card, the treatment and DVA rules. Tell us when you book, and we’ll check eligibility and any approvals needed.
Explore DVA dental careThrough the Child Dental Benefits Schedule, eligible children may receive benefits towards selected dental services. Services Australia sets eligibility and the benefit limits. Ask us to check the services proposed and the benefits available before treatment.
Explore CDBSMedicare doesn’t cover general dental treatment for everyone. Confirm eligibility and benefit limits before treatment.
SuperCare helps eligible patients apply for early release of superannuation on compassionate grounds, for approved dental treatment. It doesn’t work like a health fund, a rebate or a payment plan.
Approval isn’t certain. Early access can shrink your retirement savings and may carry tax and other financial consequences. Before applying, read what the ATO, SuperCare and your super fund currently require, and consider independent financial advice.
Read about SuperCarePayment is due on the day of service. For treatment across several visits, ask what is planned and what you will need to pay at each stage. If you want to discuss a payment arrangement, raise it before treatment begins rather than wait until the account is due.
Ask for an itemised estimate showing the treatment fees and any work priced separately. If you have extras cover, check the expected benefit with your fund before the appointment. The fund’s payment may cover only part of the fee, so plan for any remaining gap.
For finance, confirm the provider’s approval and terms before relying on it to pay. Ask our team how an approved arrangement would work with the treatment schedule and a health fund claim. If the plan changes, request an updated explanation of the costs before proceeding. You should know the amount due to the practice as well as any later repayments to a provider.
Ask us for an itemised estimate and take the proposed dental item numbers to your insurer for a benefit quote. The practice sets its fee; your fund decides the rebate under your policy. Subtracting that expected benefit from the fee gives you the likely gap.
Give the fund the practitioner details and ask about waiting periods, remaining annual benefits, service limits and any exclusions. If treatment spans several appointments, ask how the proposed dates affect the claim. A total extras balance does not necessarily tell you the amount available for each dental item.
Keep the fund’s response with the estimate and check whether it has conditions or an expiry. Tell the practice if the benefit is unclear or the gap is more than you expected. A change in treatment, practitioner or available limits may need another fund check. Do not use someone else’s rebate as your budget, even if the treatment sounds similar.
No. HICAPS is the electronic service that sends a claim to your health fund, and the fund decides the benefit. You pay the part of the practice fee that remains. A card that works at the terminal does not establish that every service is covered.
Before the visit, ask your fund about the treatment items, waiting periods and limits left on your policy. Confirm whether provider arrangements apply to the particular practitioner and service. Bring your physical member card or a supported digital card and make sure the patient details are correct.
After eligible treatment, reception can submit the claim and explain the amount left to settle. If the claim cannot be processed, we provide an itemised receipt for you to follow up with your fund. Ask reception about payment on the day and ask the insurer about any claim problem. The practice can clarify the treatment billed, but it cannot override the fund’s benefit decision.
Yes. You can book and pay for your dental care without private health insurance. Ask about the appointment fee when booking and request an estimate for further treatment before deciding. Having no fund does not require you to choose a finance product.
If cost is a concern, explain that at the start. Ask the dentist to distinguish immediate needs from optional care and whether the recommended plan can be staged. Ask our team which patient offers apply, what they include and what would cost extra; do not assume an offer covers all treatment found at a first visit.
You can also discuss available ways to pay, including direct payment and any provider arrangement that may suit. Finance has its own eligibility, fees and repayment conditions, so compare the total commitment. If you may qualify for CDBS or DVA arrangements, ask for eligibility to be checked separately. Being uninsured does not itself establish eligibility for a government dental benefit.
Not necessarily. The provider decides eligibility, approval, limits, fees and repayment terms. The practice cannot guarantee an account or transaction will be approved. Start with the written treatment estimate, then confirm which payment route is available for that care.
Read the terms for the actual product offered, including the total repayable, payment dates, any interest-free conditions and the consequences of a missed payment. An advertised limit or an existing account does not mean the full treatment fee will be approved. Check your expected health fund benefit separately before deciding how much you need to finance.
Confirm the arrangement before committing to costs that depend on it. If approval is declined or the limit is insufficient, discuss other ways to pay with our team and ask whether the clinical plan allows stages. Keep the clinical choice separate from the borrowing decision: access to finance is not evidence that treatment suits you or that the repayments are affordable.
Medicare does not cover most dental services. Eligible children may receive benefits for selected basic care through the Child Dental Benefits Schedule, while DVA dental arrangements have separate eligibility rules (Australian Government, what Medicare covers; Services Australia, CDBS). A Medicare card is not general dental insurance.
For a child, check eligibility and the remaining CDBS balance before relying on the scheme. Ask the practice which proposed items are covered and whether any fee would remain. Orthodontic, cosmetic and hospital dental services are excluded from CDBS, and the same service cannot be claimed through both CDBS and private health insurance (Services Australia).
For DVA, tell reception about your Veteran Card and relevant accepted conditions so the proposed care and any approval requirements can be checked. If neither scheme applies, ask about the practice fee, your own extras cover or direct payment options. Do not assume that a referral, a complex procedure or treatment by a dentist automatically creates a Medicare benefit.
Fees, claiming and payment arrangements are all fair questions to raise with us before you visit. You can also send an enquiry or look at current patient offers.
