Are Crowns Good Value for Money? Questions to Ask Before You Say Yes

A patient attending a dental appointment

A crown earns its cost when it saves a tooth that would otherwise split. It doesn’t when a smaller repair would have held. Asking questions is how you tell the difference.

  • A crown covers the whole tooth, so the tooth is shaped all round.
  • After root canal treatment, a crown helps the tooth last longer (ADA, teeth.org.au, root canal treatment).
  • Ask what a smaller repair would involve.

When is a crown a sensible choice?

Dentists consider a crown when a lot of the tooth is gone, when it’s cracked or broken, or after root canal treatment. After root canal treatment, research shows a crown helps the tooth last longer (ADA, teeth.org.au, root canal treatment).

The choice between a filling and a crown depends on where the tooth is, how much pressure it takes and how much natural tooth remains (ADA, teeth.org.au, root canal treatment). A cracked or broken tooth after an injury may also need a crown (healthdirect, dental injury).

What are the alternatives?

A bonded filling, or a lab-made porcelain inlay or onlay, can cover only the damaged part and keep more of your tooth (healthdirect, fillings). In some cases, watching a tooth is reasonable.

If you grind or clench, say so. Grinding can crack teeth (healthdirect, teeth grinding), and it changes what will protect your work.

What does a crown cost you in tooth?

A crown means shaping the tooth on every side. You give up some healthy structure in return for protection. That’s a real cost, and it’s why we ask whether a smaller repair would hold.

Can a crown be metal-free?

Often, yes. Ceramic is one option, and in selected cases we can design and make a crown in a single visit with our CEREC system. Our MiCrown pathway explains how we plan crowns and bridges.

Questions that help you weigh the value

  • What happens to this tooth if I don’t have a crown?
  • What would a smaller repair involve, and how long might it last?
  • Which material do you recommend, and why?
  • What’s the full cost, including a temporary crown and reviews?

Frequently Asked Questions

No. A crown is one possible treatment for a cracked tooth, and the extent of the damage determines the options (healthdirect, dental injury). An examination is needed before anyone can say whether a crown, a smaller repair or another approach is reasonable.

Ask the dentist to show where the crack is, how much sound tooth remains and why the recommended repair would help. If the proposal is a crown, ask what a filling or onlay would leave unresolved. If keeping the tooth is uncertain, that uncertainty should be part of the conversation before you pay for a major restoration.

Tell the dentist about pain on biting, sensitivity and any grinding. Ask what you can expect from the proposed repair and what might still require treatment later. A crown fee is easier to assess when you understand the problem it is intended to solve. Neither the price nor the word “crown” establishes that it is the right choice for every crack.
