Porcelain Veneers: What to Expect, and How to Look After Them

A patient looking at their teeth in a hand mirror

Porcelain veneers are thin ceramic shells fixed to the front of a tooth. They’re metal-free, and they’re a long commitment, so it helps to know what you’re agreeing to.

How are porcelain veneers made?

Your dentist copies your teeth with an impression or a 3D scan. The veneers are then made in a laboratory, and you return to have them fixed. Some practices have a CEREC machine that makes them on site (healthdirect, veneers).

A small amount of natural tooth may need trimming so the veneer fits (healthdirect, veneers).

Who might they not suit?

Veneers may not suit you if you grind or clench your teeth, or if you have gum disease. They don’t treat decay or bite problems either (healthdirect, veneers).

Your dentist checks these first. Gentler options include repairing a small area with resin, or orthodontic treatment (healthdirect, veneers).

What can go wrong?

  • Your teeth may feel more sensitive, because some enamel is removed.
  • If your gums shrink, the edges of the veneers can show.
  • The colour of a veneer can’t be changed after it’s fixed.
  • Your other teeth may discolour and no longer match.

Veneers may need replacing after chips, fractures or colour changes over time (healthdirect, veneers).

How do you care for them?

Brush and floss as you would natural teeth, and keep your regular visits (healthdirect, veneers).

If you grind your teeth, ask about a night guard. A custom mouthguard is one of the ways to protect teeth from grinding (healthdirect, teeth grinding). Read about our custom bite protection.

Ask about the whole cost too, including reviews and future replacement. Porcelain veneers generally cost more than resin ones (healthdirect, veneers).

MiVeneer Planning Pathway

Frequently Asked Questions

Porcelain veneers can involve removing some enamel, so ask what preparation your own teeth would need before you agree (healthdirect, veneers). Do not treat the process as a temporary cover that lets you return to untouched teeth later.

Have the dentist show you the proposed teeth and explain the reason for each veneer. Ask whether a smaller repair, whitening or orthodontic assessment could address your concern with a different commitment. The answer may vary from one tooth to another, even within the same smile.

Discuss possible sensitivity, changes at the gum edge and what replacement would involve over time. Ask for those risks and maintenance costs to be explained alongside the appearance plan. If the proposal includes teeth that do not bother you, ask why they are included. You can take the estimate away, seek another opinion or decide that preserving your existing teeth matters more than the cosmetic change.
